Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, is in the process of removing the option for users to include their preferred pronouns on their profiles. This move comes after Twitter initially introduced the feature in 2021 in an effort to promote greater representation in social apps, following the lead of other platforms. However, the change in policy regarding pronouns coincided with Elon Musk’s acquisition of the app, as Musk has been vocal about his disapproval of individuals choosing their own pronouns.

The decision to remove pronouns from profiles has sparked backlash from LGBTQ+ users, as it is seen as a significant blow to their visibility and representation on the platform. The ban on deadnaming and deliberate misgendering of transgender users was also lifted as part of the policy change. This shift in stance on pronouns is not likely to improve X’s appeal with key advertisers and partners, as it reflects a counter-progressive approach that may alienate certain user groups.

Although the option to display preferred pronouns was never fully rolled out, some users did have access to it before Musk’s takeover. The backend code of the app now indicates that all references to pronouns are being removed entirely. This decision aligns with Musk’s personal beliefs on pronouns, which he views as part of “woke ideology”. It is unclear whether X will introduce a revised version of pronoun options in the future, as Musk’s influence over the platform is strong.

X was recently forced to revise its deadnaming policies in Brazil due to a court order, which the company is reportedly challenging. If similar mandates are issued in other regions, X may be compelled to implement changes regarding pronoun usage. However, Elon Musk’s firm stance against allowing users to choose their own pronouns suggests that such updates are unlikely to be implemented voluntarily. The removal of pronoun options may restrict user expression and inclusivity on the platform, leading to further scrutiny and criticism.
