Paans, a graduate student at the University of Michigan, was part of the 2023 Wolverine’s National Champions team that won the final against UC Santa Barbara. Paans scored multiple times during the school’s blow-out matches leading up to the championship, defeating Virginia 17-5 and Washington 17-6.
In January, the Collegiate Water Polo Association released a policy and appeal process allowing transgender athletes to compete in their preferred gender competition. However, some parents of Michigan’s opponents have expressed concerns about Paans using the female locker rooms during matches, leading to outrage on social media about the age gap between Paans and the college students involved in the tournament.
