When More Becomes Less: The Simplicity Lesson That Changed How I Build

When I started building a learning website for Commerce students, I assumed improvement meant adding more. More pages. More features. More categories. More quizzes. More tools. That felt like progress because every new addition was visible. But after spending time using the site the way a student would use it, I realized something uncomfortable: a product can become more complete while becoming harder to use.

That changed the way I think about product simplicity.

Users Experience the Path, Not the Features

The first lesson was that users do not experience features one by one. They experience the path between them.

A notes page may be useful. A quiz may be useful. A test series may be useful. But if a student has to move through several menus, repeated categories and unclear buttons to reach them, the value of those features drops quickly. I began asking a much simpler question: what is the student actually trying to do right now?

Usually the answer was not “explore the platform.” It was something like: I need notes for this chapter. I want to test whether I understand this topic. I have an exam soon and need practice. Once I looked at the website through those tasks, a lot of unnecessary complexity became obvious.

Repeated Choices Create Friction

On a desktop screen, a long navigation structure can look organized. On a phone, the same structure can feel exhausting. Students may open a site between classes, during travel or while revising quickly. If every action requires another decision, the interface starts competing with the learning.

I learned to prefer one obvious next action over several equally visible options. That does not mean removing everything. It means deciding what deserves attention first. For example, if a student finishes a chapter note, the next useful action may be a short quiz. So instead of sending them back to a large menu, the page can simply say: “Test this chapter now.”

Mobile-First Changes Product Priorities

The third lesson was that mobile-first is not only a design choice. It changes product priorities. When I looked at the site mainly on a laptop, I cared about how much information I could display. When I looked at it on a phone, I cared about how quickly a student could reach the right thing. That pushed me toward shorter paths, clearer buttons, fewer repeated sections and lighter pages.

Performance became part of usability too. A visually impressive page that takes too long to load does not feel impressive to the person waiting for it. In education especially, the website should disappear into the background. The student should be thinking about the concept, not about the interface.

Every Feature Has a Hidden Cost

Adding a feature is not a one-time decision. It creates future work: bugs, mobile testing, content updates, navigation changes, performance checks and questions about how the feature connects with everything else. A feature therefore has a cost even if it is technically free to build. That made me more selective. Instead of asking, “Can I add this?” I started asking, “Will students use this enough to justify the complexity it adds?”

AI Tools Amplify Your Decisions — Good and Bad

AI can make it extremely easy to produce more: more copy, more components, more ideas, more variations. That speed is useful, but it can also make a product noisy very quickly. The important human job is still deciding what should exist at all. AI can help generate options, debug code or suggest layouts. It cannot automatically know which feature matters most to a specific group of students. That judgment still comes from observing the user, testing the experience and being willing to remove things.

Even low traffic can teach you something. Which pages do they reach first? Where do they stop? Which resources do they actually use? Sometimes the most useful product decision is not adding a new feature — it is making an existing useful feature easier to find.

Product simplicity is not about making a product basic. It is about deciding what matters enough to stay in the user’s way — and what should quietly get out of it. For a student, that might mean finding a chapter note in two taps instead of five. The principle scales to any product.
